hmmm…
Does this explain some of the appeal of plaintiffs to juries? We like a good victim.
Is this an “American” cultural phenomena? (My husband says it is — born in another country, he is all for the winning team; we call him a fair weather fan).
Is this ingrained in us through our guiding fictions? Fairy Tales? Rags to Riches stories?
Stories about people who come from nowhere and make it to the land of somewhere are appealing. Maybe it’s because we can relate and identify with such heroines. The people who start out with every advantage and win are well — just not that interesting or inspiring. Some may envy them but that’s no fun, who wants all that negative energy?
As one well-known mediator told me, “When I started out I was 32 years old and a ‘nobody.’”
I found that encouraging.
It’s an interesting question. I often find myself rooting for the underdogs.
Which brings me to the question of the day or of this weekend: Will the Chargers Upset the Pats?
History may be on their side. I know my fellow mediation blogger, Diane Levin, has confessed to being a Patriots fan.
I won’t hold it against her. You see the beautiful blue ocean behind my picture up there? That’s from none other than beautiful San Diego, California. Yep I’m a San Diegan even though I’m here in Jersey.
No doubt about it, the Patriots have been amazing this season, undefeated and all. Some key Chargers players are injured and banged up. I was amazed that they beat the Colts when the star running back, quarterback and tight end were out of the game. That says a lot about the team.
So, I’m rooting for the underdogs. There’s just something all-American about it. It’s like baseball and apple pie.
Oh, and for those of you like me who were disgusted that the Colts fans booed the girl who wore the Patriots uniform when they were honoring the winners of the competition, I hear the Patriots are going to honor her at the game this weekend.
What do you say Diane are the Pats going to trounce the Chargers? Do the underdogs have a chance?
I’m still trying to figure out how I can tie today’s post to marketing your practice. It’s a really big stretch…I’m sure the rooting for the underdogs thing relates in some way to our cultural makeup that we could tie into marketing…
Or, how about we all need to have some fun??
Life’s too short, let’s enjoy it!

Kristina, I never let football rivalries come between me and a friend. This time, however, I think we might need a mediator!
In responding to your post, I’m torn between my sports enthusiast’s superstition that prompts me to avoid making public predictions about my team’s likelihood of victory in a particular game (a superstition born of 49 years of Red Sox fandom) and my desire as a deliriously happy Patriot’s supporter to yell out defiantly, “The Chargers are going down in flames, baby!!”
So let me instead say, “Let the best team win” (and under my breath add, “and let that team be the Pats”).
Thanks for taking a detour from your usual topic, Kristina!

[…] Some folks, however, are rooting for the San Diego underdogs. Kristina Haymes, an attorney and mediator who blogs about mediation marketing, and also an avowed Chargers fan, has thrown down the gauntlet. Knowing that my heart belongs to the Patriots, she asks me, What do you say Diane are the Pats going to trounce the Chargers? Do the underdogs have a chance? […]
