Mediator comment on whether family mediators should follow up with parties…

1 March 2007

A Mediation Marketing Tips reader, Copper Harding, had the following comment to add to the discussion from the follow up posts one and two:

“I think that family mediators should do a follow-up no matter what the
outcome of the mediation.  I think that you should do this because in
your initial introduction and preparation you told all parties involved
that you do one firm follow-up as a track on my skills as a mediator
and on what they might need in the future.  This, of course, is without
charge.”

Copper raises a good point which is preparing the parties for the process and your procedures.  If you have told them in advance that it is your practice to follow up with the parties, then it seems any follow up would be routine and not viewed as coercive.

Always looking for ways to add value to your clients.  I can tell you that in my experience, the parties are grateful that I follow up (especially when they did reach an agreement) and view it as me going the extra mile without charge.

Happy Mediating… remember who you are as a professional is some of the most important marketing you do.

Never Give Up!
