Building your mediation practice through writing: getting published

10 October 2006

I’ve written before on writing as an excellent strategy to market your mediation practice.

If you like to write, this is an excellent way to connect with potential clients.

Remember, the heart of marketing your practice is about providing value to those to whom you wish to market.

So, your first goal should be to share information or knowledge that would be valuable to people.

You can also begin to build the necessary trust and credibility you need by showcasing your expertise.  The leaders in the field are those who publish and establish their position as experts.

Here are some steps to follow:

Once you have defined your mediation niche or specialty (yes, as I have posted on many, many ocassions, in the beginning you must specialize, you can branch out to other areas later).

Then, identify a publication that your target audience reads.  (e.g. if you are an employment mediator, think about publications that employment lawyers read in your targeted jurisdiction).

Next, identify an angle for your writing (interviewer, mini case study etc. — I list several formats in my success system action plan).

Contact publishers and ask what they are looking for.  Check editorial calendars for special editions.

Finally, write the article and submit it for publication.  If you don’t want to write it, outline it and have a ghost writer write it.

Ok, so I recently did the above steps and wrote an article for the New Jersey Lawyer targeting attorneys who want to build their dream mediation practice.

Check it out, click here.  Maybe you’re an attorney and want to build a mediation practice.  This article is a good starting point.

Let’s hear it, what article are you going to write, how are you going to target your audience and establish your expertise in an area?  The written word is powerful.

Committed to your success,

Your partner in peace,

Kristina Haymes
